The Scottish Gas Men's Scottish Cup: It leaves its mark - First Round Preview

Stonehaven are competing in the First Round of the Scottish Gas Men's Scottish Cup for the first time

When it comes to the Scottish Cup, one tiny moment can live forever.

A penalty saved. A last-minute winner. A goal you still see every time you close your eyes. These stories become folklore. These limbs become legend. These moments become part of you.

Your club. Your community. Your cup. Your legacy.

The Scottish Gas Men's Scottish Cup. It leaves its mark.

The greatest cup competition in the world returns this weekend with the First Round, with 30 matches taking place across the country.

Following the conclusion of the three Preliminary Rounds, the competition begins properly, with the Highland League, Lowland League East and Lowland League West sides joining.

And the action gets underway on Friday evening as Cumnock Juniors host rivals Auchinleck Talbot in front of the BBC cameras.

That match is a reverse of the same fixture at this stage last season, with Talbot winning 2-1 on that occasion at Beechwood Park. The Lowland League West side went on to go all the way to the Fourth Round when they were eventually beaten by competition winners Celtic.

The other 29 matches then take place on Saturday. Linlithgow Rose's clash with Clydebank is a tie that catches the eye, following their title battle in the Lowland League last season, while Nairn County v Gretna 2008 meet for the first time in a battle of north against south.

Kirkintilloch Rob Roy host Banks O'Dee in their first official Scottish Cup match, after obtaining a Scottish FA licence earlier this year, while Renfrew entertain Brora having also gained their licence.

Full results will be posted on the Scottish Cup social media channels and the Scottish FA website.

Voices of the Cup

The Scottish Cup will be on its travels again this season as we pay tribute to some of the players, staff and supporters who make this great competition all that it is.

The trophy began its journey in Stonehaven, ahead of the Aberdeenshire side's First Round tie away to Keith on Saturday.

Stonehaven are competing in the competition for the first time and they have already come through three tricky away Preliminary Round ties against Glenafton, Creetown and Blackburn United.

We caught up with Stonehaven's Rob Armstrong who is relishing playing in the Scottish Gas Men's Scottish Cup for his hometown team.

"It probably is the top moment in my career, to be fair," he said. "It's really big for the club and for me, to be playing for your hometown team in the Scottish Cup. It's the one you watch growing up and it's the one you want to play in if you get the chance to so it's amazing to be actually playing in it.

"I grew up in Stonehaven, I've lived here all my life. Stonehaven was a junior club before so it was never really an option to get in the Scottish Cup. Since that changed it's always been a potential to get in the Scottish Cup but you still had to win the league to get there and it was over 30 years since we had won the league.

"We didn't even start the season well but then we went unbeaten from December onwards and went from there and won the league and got into the Scottish Cup. We've had it the hard way with three away trips so far but we've got some great results and it's great to be in the First Round.

"I'm getting to the age where this could be my last season to be fair, so playing in the Scottish Cup was always an incentive to stay on a bit longer. It definitely could be my last chance at it, that's for sure. Keith will be a hard game but it's one we think we can cause them problems. If we play how we think we can play, then we'll have a chance."
