The first-round draw for the Scottish Gas Women’s Scottish Cup took place at Barclays Hampden this evening with host Eilidh Barbour and Helen Nelson from the Scotland Women’s Rugby Union side.

Following the conclusion of preliminary rounds one and two, the first round draw sees fixtures taking place on Sunday, 20 September with SWPL sides entering as normal in Round Three, on Sunday, 22 November.

After the conclusion of the draw, the 80 cap Scotland Rugby international Helen Nelson spoke about the excitement around the development of women’s sport in Scotland, and her involvement in the Scottish Gas Women's Scottish Cup draw.

“Being involved in the cup draw was cool, very cool! I keep an eye on football in Scotland so it was great to be involved in the draw.”

“There’s a few girls in the squad, Lisa Thomson and Chloe Rollie who were probably a bit better than me at football, so they’ve got a few friends in the mix for the competition.”

“I played a lot of sports as a kid and I think it was great. It keeps the enjoyment part of it, as a kid doing so many different sports, I didn’t get bored of doing the same things over and over again.”

“It gives you a bit of an all-round experience and has stood me in good stead in my rugby career.”

“I think it’s quite an over-used term now, but if you can’t see it, you can’t be it, and I think it’s so important for young girls in schools. I didn’t necessarily have that many female role models to look up to, so now, as a squad, Scotland women are really passionate about getting out and speaking to as many girls as possible about it and encouraging them to play sports. It’s changed my life and I want to try and spread that idea, whatever sport they’re playing, it can give you so much and everyone should experience that.”
