Scotland 5 (Stewart, 23, 26, Wilson, 28, Fletcher, 60, Wales, 80) Azerbaijan 2 (Akhundzada, 21, Mammadov, 70) A new-look Scotland lined up at BBSP Rugby Park in front of a strong crowd of almost 1300 fans, with Fieldson, and Feeney making their Under-21s debut in the back line, a strong midfield pairing of Carr and Fletcher, with Wilson, Stewart and Curtis offering a potent looking attack. The Young Scots started on the front foot, utilising the width as the pairings of Wilson and Steven on the left and Lobban and Curtis on the right linking up well. The first shot on target came on 13 minutes as some great work from Curtis on the right hand side of the box saw him slide Lobban in, who clipped a deep cross finding Taylor Steven at the back post, with his shot cleared agonisingly off the line. For all Scotland's early pressure, it was the visitors that took the league. Breaking in from the right hand side, Neriman Akhundzada struck a low shot which evaded Liam McFarlane in the corner of the Scotland goal. The visitor's lead was short-lived as minutes later, a left-footed cross from Findlay Curtis found Barney Stewart lifting a header over the Azeri keeper to get Scotland back on terms. Scotland doubled up moments later as another deep cross from Lobban found Steven, who nodded down for Barney Stewart to poke the ball home and give the Scots the lead. The Azeri visitors simply couldn't get on terms with the hosts as Tyler Fletcher's quick free-kick to Curtis resulted in another wicked cross that saw James Wilson bullet past the keeper to make it three goals in five minutes and a 3-1 lead. The Scots saw out the half on the front foot, unable to extend the lead, but in a strong position after 45 minutes. Scotland's first chance of the second half came from more high intensity pressing as Fletcher and Steven combined to nick the ball, setting Stewart free to play in Curtis, but his left-footed shot was just over the bar. Scotland made it four as Tyler Fletcher got his first goal for Scotland, Taylor Steven pressed forward on the left hand side, sliding in Fletcher who's flick found Curtis, as the keeper attempted to clear the ball, Fletcher coolly tucked it across the goal into the corner.
The visitors pulled one back with just over 20 minutes remaining, as a challenging cross into the box was headed into the ground by defender Murad Mammadov.
The Scots returned the lead to three on the 80th minute as Curtis continued to torment the Azeri back-line, driving and dribbling as they backed off, opening up the space to slide the ball through to Bobby Wales who thrashed it home to score on his return to Rugby Park.
The young Scots play-off chances were ended earlier in the evening as Czechia's defeat of Bulgaria sealed their play-off spot in Group B, but the future looks bright for the group as they prepare to head to Pazardzhik for the final group game against Bulgaria.
