TEAM NEWS

Michael Tuohy made two changes to the side that defeated Romania 3-0 in their opening European qualifier on Wednesday. Marcie Kane and Olivia Petrie replaced Mirren Duncan and Lucy Horberry in the starting line-up, while Toni Campbell took over the captaincy from Saoirse Coyle Morrow.

AS IT HAPPENED

Ukraine registered their first effort of the afternoon after just three minutes, with Anna Liakh trying her luck from distance, but Julia Gorska comfortably gathered her strike.

Scotland quickly settled into the game and began to put pressure on the visitors. Olivia Petrie made a promising run down the left flank before delivering a dangerous cross that was turned behind for a corner.

The hosts continued to enjoy the better of the opening exchanges. However, despite Scotland's positive start, Ukraine were given the chance to take the lead in the 16th minute. Isla Miller initially did well to block an effort from Zlata Voloshchuk inside the penalty area, but her subsequent challenge on Vitalina Boichuk was mistimed, leaving the referee with a decision to make.

Anastasiia Priadko confidently converted the resulting penalty, slotting it into the bottom corner to give the visitors a 19th-minute lead against the run of play.

Scotland looked to respond immediately, continuing to enjoy spells of possession and building attacks patiently, while Ukraine appeared content to sit back and look for opportunities on the counterattack.

The hosts came close to an equaliser in the 26th minute when Phoebe O'Donnell fired a dangerous ball across the six-yard box, but no one was there to finish.

Moments later, Hope had a great chance to level the score, but Ukraine goalkeeper Oleksandra Lizenkova blocked her clear shot with her legs.

Petrie remained a lively presence down the left, causing problems for Ukraine's Anna Liakh, although the defender stood firm against the Scotland winger's attacking runs.

As the half approached its conclusion, Ukraine began to grow into the contest. Boichuk tested Gorska from distance, but the Scotland goalkeeper was equal to it.

Scotland kept threatening from set pieces, with several corners causing problems inside the Ukrainian penalty area, but the hosts couldn't make their pressure count.

Ukraine almost found another opening in the 39th minute when captain Arina Paskarenko broke into the Scotland box, but Toni Campbell recovered superbly to intercept before the midfielder could get her shot away.

Despite enjoying more first-half chances, Scotland went into the interval trailing by a single goal.

HT: Scotland 0 – 1 Ukraine

Scotland made one change at the interval, with Eilidh McCormack replacing Lexi Kelly Fellows as the hosts looked to find a way back into the contest.

The Scots picked up where they left off in the first half, dominating possession and continuing to pressure the Ukrainian defence.

Phoebe O'Donnell proved a constant threat down the right flank, frequently beating several Ukrainian defenders before delivering a dangerous cross into the penalty area that troubled the visitors.

Scotland came close to finding an equaliser when Olivia Petrie made another impressive run down the left before picking out O'Donnell at the back post. The winger directed her effort towards the near post, but could only find the side netting.

Michael Tuohy made a double substitution in the 63rd minute, bringing on Lucy Horberry and Mirren Duncan for Coyle Morrow and Petrie as Scotland continued to threaten down both wings.

O'Donnell produced a brilliant run in the 69th minute before delivering another dangerous ball into the area. The winger danced past several defenders on the right side of the box before the ball eventually fell to Marcie Kane, whose effort forced a fine save from Lizenkova.

Scotland's persistence finally paid off in the 74th minute. Freya McIndoe delivered an inviting cross from the right which was met by Lucy Hope, who guided her header beyond the Ukrainian goalkeeper to bring the hosts level.

With momentum firmly on their side, Scotland pushed for a winner, winning a succession of corners as Ukraine committed almost their entire team to defending their penalty area.

The hosts came agonisingly close in the 86th minute when O'Donnell cut inside from the right and unleashed a powerful strike that crashed against the crossbar.

However, the danger was far from over for Ukraine, as the ball fell kindly to Hope inside the box moments later. The forward reacted quickest and fired beyond Lizenkova to complete her double and give Scotland a deserved lead.

Scotland were not finished there, and just three minutes later Hope was involved once again. The forward raced onto a through ball and delivered a cross into the penalty area, which deflected off Ukraine defender Yelyzaveta Hirun and into the net to extend the hosts' advantage.

It capped off an impressive second-half comeback from Scotland, whose relentless attacking pressure earned three late goals and another victory in their European qualifying campaign.
