Michael Tuohy named his first side of the new cycle, with four changes from the side that faced Greece back in March. Ellie Harkin, Saoirse Coyle Morrow, Mirren Duncan and Lucy Horberry earned their way into the starting eleven.

As It Happened

European Champions Germany showed plenty of intent from the first whistle and forced a corner within forty-five seconds, which allowed for them to pin Scotland in their own half in the early stages. The opening ten minutes saw plenty of threat from the visitors’ set play, but goalkeeper Julia Gorska was yet to be tested.

Scotland’s slow start was punished within twelve minutes. Yet more relentless pressing paid off and Luise Krczal came away with the ball 30 yards from goal, who picked out Trümer just inside the penalty box. The midfielder picked her spot and wrapped a right footed effort beyond Gorska at the near post for a 1-0 lead.

Germany nearly doubled their lead just four minutes later as Thea Kraus’ in-swinging corner struck the front post after bouncing through without a touch. Their next chance was a more clear cut as Ida Roppel found a yard of space in the box and tried to pick out the top corner - only see her right-footed finish smothered by Gorska.

After a period of absorbing pressure in the opening twenty minutes, Scotland began to grow into the game, competing with much more physicality and attacking intent.

Scotland’s best opportunity came on the counter-attack in the last moments of the first half. Phoebe O’Donnell was released up the right wing with support charging through the middle, but the midfielder got caught in two minds amidst cries from the stands to shoot early and her effort sailed out and behind.

Half Time: Scotland 0-1 Germany

Germany picked up where they left off, playing plenty of football in Scotland’s half over the opening 15 minutes.

However, with so many bodies forward, they left themselves vulnerable on the counter, and Scotland soon punished their attacking setup. After clearing a corner, Gorska immediately picked out the run of O’Donnell. As Germany goalkeeper Selina Großer burst towards halfway to intercept, O’Donnell nodded the ball beyond the German stopper and rolled the ball into an empty net to level the score at 1-1 after 62 minutes.

Tuohy made his first two changes immediately after the goal as Saorise Coyle Morrow and Mirren Duncan were replaced by Fearne Smith and Marcie Kane.

It didn’t take long for Germany to get back on the front foot. Second half substitute Lucie Meyer headed just wide from a corner, and Ela Kural struck the crossbar with a looping effort from distance.

Freya McIndoe, Lexie Fellows, and Lucy Hope made way for Elidh McCormack, Alex Campbell and Olivia Reid after 72 minutes.

In the closing ten minutes, both sides came close to producing a winning goal - the first opportunity of which fell the way of Scotland. O’Donnell found space down the right hand side of the Germany final third and her cross-come-shot needed tipping over by Großer. That would be her last act of the match, as she and Lucy Horberry were substituted for Marley Harrow and Lucia McIntyre after 83 minutes.

With two minutes left to play, Julia Gorska was called on once more as she tipped a powerful free-kick onto the bar. Germany very nearly found the winner moments after but Maryam Bali failed to hit the target from 12 yards out after being picked out unmarked by a low cross.

Referee Alesha McLean brought the action to a close, and Michael Tuohy can take plenty of positives away against a strong Germany side before they face one another once more on Sunday.
